While it doesn’t appear directly in the book, I liked how we got some screen time of what Gandalf was up to when he parted from the group before they entered the Mirkwood forest. I liked how Beorn mentioned how he was the last of his kind-I got a Doctor vibe from him, although Beorn is much more grumpy and standoffish. I did realize that this part was different from the book, however overall I think that it played out well. I loved how they handled Beorn, in particular the part where he changes back into a man. Now, onto the content of the movie itself. This is what the 48fps was supposed to achieve, and it did do its job, although it took me a second to adjust. Also on the technical side, I do think that I saw this film in the 48 frames per second rather than the regular 24 that most movies are in-the reason I say this is because I was getting a different visual experience that is a little hard to describe other than how it seemed to me to be more lifelike/fluid than normal. Personally, I would have been irritated if this story was only one film, and I trust Peter Jackson enough from the Lord of the Rings films that he knows what he is doing. Though it wasn’t completely faithful to the book, I think that the length of this film and the fact that this story is split into 3 parts really allows for detail that would have otherwise been left out. I am pretty sure that it was filmed with special 3D-capable cameras-the scenic shots certainly felt that way! I also did not mind the length of the film, although I have heard that some have felt that it was a little long for their tastes. As well, I think that the 3D in this film was really well done and didn’t have a “cheap” feel to it. Note that there are some things that would be considered spoilers, if you haven’t seen it and would really mind about that sort of thing.įirst I have to say that the visuals and the general scenery of the film was absolutely gorgeous and immediately made me want to visit New Zealand and just go for a hike and take hundreds of pictures. I figured that I would write a review while everything is fresh in my mind. Again, sorry for the lack of communication for a while but we're back on top of things now.I went to see The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug today (in 3D too), and it was really good. I've been toying with the idea of roofing not needing any input from the dwarves, just being a kind of UI setting which has an effect in-game, but that doesn't really go with the simulated world I'm aiming for in King under the Mountain so I suppose that means placing roofing will need a dwarf to get the right resources and do the work after all! Following that, I'm very excited to get stuck into Alpha 6 as it'll be the first time in a long time we've had new art assets added to the game, things that have been ready and waiting to go on the artwork side but waiting for the implementation to catch up! Looking ahead, the roadmap has been updated and the only part remaining for Alpha 5 is constructing roofing and flooring to have proper rooms and buildings in the game. The latest update includes his translation as part of the community translations mod, and perhaps just as importantly also includes the Turkish flag to display alongside it. There was an issue with soup getting mixed up with water in a kitchen and buckets ended up full of soup and stuck! In fact there's now an in-game option to get a dwarf to empty the contents of an unused container as a workaround for similar problems in the future, though primarily I want to stop them from happening in the first place.Īlso a big thank you to community member Lyserg who has translated the game into Turkish. Rather than list them all here, you can try them out for yourself with the latest version (Alpha 5.2) from the usual Itch.io page.Īnd that's not all either - perhaps the single most requested display feature has finally been implemented - you can now run the game in borderless fullscreen mode! The new setting should be set by default if you were using the old exclusive fullscreen display mode, and the exclusive fullscreen option is still included for those that prefer it (mostly for older hardware that might struggle with games not running exclusively).Īs ever, there's some bugfixes included, mostly thanks to the help of the community and member SirRockstar in particular who's been invaluable in providing reproducible problems with larger settlements.
